Scope
Five establishments within walking distance of Finders Hotel Fu Qian, No. 86, Sec. 1, Chongqing South Road, Zhongzheng District. Four are inside 450 metres. The hotel sits at the edge of 城中市場 (Chengzhong Market), a lane network between Taipei Main Station, Ximen and NTU Hospital stations that carries a concentration of pre-1970s establishments serving office workers rather than visitors.
Address: No. 7, Lane 46, Sec. 1, Chongqing South Road
Hours: 10:00–20:00 · Telephone +886-2-2381-5604
Seventy-plus years in the Chengzhong Market lanes. The distinguishing feature is hand-pulled noodles (拉麵) rather than the machine-cut noodle standard to Taiwanese beef noodle shops — a Shandong inheritance. Portions are large and unrefined.
- Beef noodles: NTD 180 (rising roughly NTD 30 every year or two)
- Order the 滷味 braised-side counter — local consensus rates it above the noodles
- Fried pork cutlet available as an add-on; dumplings and soup dumplings also served
Open all five trip days.
Address: No. 2, Lane 14, Sec. 1, Kaifeng Street
Hours: 08:00–20:00, closed Sunday · Telephone +886-2-2311-3581
Founded 1951 by 劉佩芹, who began as a street pitch near 228 Park and the Shin Kong tower before taking the current premises; now run by second-generation 劉少麟. Michelin Bib Gourmand 2018 and 2019, and a Taipei Beef Noodle Festival winner.
Queues form at office lunch hours. Open all five trip days — the Sunday closure falls outside the window.
Astoria
Address: No. 5, Sec. 1, Wuchang Street
Hours: 10:00–21:00
Founded in 1949 by 艾斯尼 (Elsner) — a former commander in the Tsar's guard — and a compatriot, transplanting a business they had run on Shanghai's Avenue Joffre. "明星" renders the Russian name Astoria. The bakery occupied the ground floor and the café the first floor above.
It became Taiwan's original literary salon: 三毛, 白先勇 and the poet 周夢蝶 — who ran a book stall at the door for two decades — all worked here. Chiang Ching-kuo's Russian-born wife, sent her escort to buy the confectionery.
Open all five trip days.
Address: 2F, No. 61, Yanping South Road
Telephone: +886-2-2381-1487
Opened 1971; one of Taipei's four established pork-chop houses alongside 君悅, 金園 and 中一. The food is competent 排骨飯 — fried pork cutlet over rice with minced-pork sauce, a vegetable and a soup of the day, from NTD 160.
The room is the reason to go. It is built as a 1970s nakashi supper club: stained glass, neon, shooting-star lights, a mirror ball and cabinets of antiques, entirely unrenovated. Nothing else in central Taipei preserves that interior register.
Address: 2F, Huashan Market, No. 108, Sec. 1, Zhongxiao East Road
Nearest MRT: Shandao Temple Station, exit 5 — the market is immediately visible; the stall is on the second floor
The definitive Taipei breakfast and a Michelin Bib Gourmand fixture. NTD 30–70 per item.
- 厚燒餅 — the thick-cut baked flatbread, the item to order
Closure Matrix — Nov 2–6 2026
Tue 3 Nov: 東一排骨 closed (first Tuesday). All others open.
Wed 4 – Fri 6 Nov: all five open.
