What It Is

有記名茶 (Wang Tea) is an active tea refinery founded in 1890, now in its fifth generation of family operation. The facility roasts oolongs using traditional charcoal-firing furnaces (焙籠, pèi lóng) — a technique that has almost entirely disappeared from commercial tea production in Taiwan, replaced by electric roasters. The furnaces at 有記名茶 are still in daily use. The process produces a distinct smoky depth and mineral finish that electric roasting cannot replicate.

The charcoal-roasting room is not a reconstruction or a museum display. It is a working production floor. Visitors enter alongside the furnaces.

Why It Is Unusual

New Taipei City's Pinglin and Maokong produce Taiwan's best-known oolongs; Taipei's Dadaocheng has historically been the trading hub. 有記名茶 is neither a tea museum nor a tea café — it is a wholesale-and-retail refinery that still manufactures on-site. The charcoal-firing furnace (焙籠) visible to visitors is the same equipment used to roast the tea sold in the front room. The ambient smell of coal smoke and baking tea leaves is part of the experience.

The family transformed the operation in 2004 to admit the public: guides explain each step of the charcoal-roasting process; historical documents and refinery equipment are on display alongside the working production area. The commercial operation has not stopped to accommodate visitors — visitors are admitted into a functioning factory.

What to Buy

  • 文山包種 (Wenshan Pouchong) — light oxidation, lightly roasted; 有記名茶's signature everyday tea; grown in Wenshan District, refined here
  • 鐵觀音 (Traditional Tieguanyin) — heavier oxidation and deeper charcoal roast; increasingly rare at this style and quality level in Taipei
  • 炭焙烏龍 (Charcoal-Roasted Oolong) — the house specialty; the roast level is adjusted on-site rather than sourced finished; no equivalent in a standard tea shop

All three are available as take-away gifts in tins suitable for travel. The charcoal-roasted grades travel better than lightly oxidised greens — the roasting stabilises the leaf.

Not to Confuse

新芳春茶行 (Sin Hong Choon, filed separately) is a preserved 1934 Japanese-colonial tea warehouse in Datong, now operated as a heritage site and museum; it no longer processes tea. 有記名茶 is the inverse — an active, commercially operating refinery that has opened its production floor to the public. The two cover different things.
