What It Is
蚤操染織 (Fleacise) is a natural-dye workshop in a residential lane off Nanjing West Road, Datong District, specialising in traditional Taiwanese 藍染 (indigo dyeing) and plant-based natural dyeing. Sessions teach the fermented-vat indigo method — the same technique used in Dadaocheng's cloth trade during the Qing and Japanese colonial eras — rather than synthetic substitutes. Participants dye their own textile (tote bag, scarf, or cloth square) using fold-and-bind resist techniques; the result is a unique resist-patterned piece in blue-on-natural colourway. English-language sessions are available. Hand-dyed retail goods are also sold at the studio.
Why It Is Unusual
Dadaocheng (大稻埕) was Taiwan's foremost commercial port from the 1860s through the Japanese era. Its Yongle Market block (est. 1914) anchored the island's wholesale textile trade; indigo-dyed blue cloth (藍布) was a principal export commodity of the Qing-era hinterland, reaching the Dadaocheng wharves for shipment to mainland China and Southeast Asia. The industry collapsed during the Japanese era's shift to chemical dyes and synthetic textiles. Traditional fermented-vat indigo dyeing (as opposed to vat indigo powder) survives primarily in New Taipei City's Sanxia district and in a handful of specialist workshops; Fleacise is among the only practitioners in Taipei proper and operates within a lane directly adjacent to the historical textile district it references.

What to Buy
Hand-dyed cotton or linen goods in traditional indigo colourways. Resist-patterned tote bags are the most portable souvenir; the dyeing is done on-site with natural indigo, so the colour depth and pattern variation are distinct from mass-produced imitation-indigo merchandise sold in tourist markets. Linen scarves in the NT$400–600 range are the strongest value: lightweight, durable, and not available in this form elsewhere in Taipei.
