What It Is
A third-floor bespoke atelier making fully hand-sewn 旗袍 (qipao / cheongsam) using the combined techniques of the Shanghai and Fuzhou tailoring schools, with no ground-floor shopfront and no street signage. Founded in 1982 by Master Lin Jinde (林錦德) under the name 錦繡旗袍店, the studio relocated to its current Boai Road premises in 2020 under its present name. It is registered in Taiwan's National Cultural Memory Database as a recognized cultural organization.
Every seam is hand-stitched. The ordering process involves a structured consultation covering garment length, whether to include piping (緄邊), internal lining, chest-waist darts, frog-button type and count (盤釦), collar style (領型), sleeve cut (袖型), collar height, and hem-vent height. Clients typically bring fabric purchased at Yongle Market in Datong, or select from the studio's own stock. Master Lin uses a written contract for all orders — a policy he instituted early in his career after being underpaid.
Master Lin was the exclusive qipao maker for Madame Chiang Fang-liang (蔣方良), wife of President Chiang Ching-kuo (who governed Taiwan 1978–1988), while his atelier operated within the Boai Special Zone surrounding the Presidential Office. The current Boai Road premises remains within that same zone. He is now approximately 83 years old and still active at the studio; a late-2024 customer review describes the old master "overseeing" (老師傅坐鎮). His formally trained successor, Liu Nailing (劉乃綾), handles primary client communication.

Why It Is Unusual
Hand-sewn qipao ateliers of this type are nearly extinct in Taiwan. Industrial cutting and machine sewing displaced them through the 1980s and 1990s. This studio has refused to mechanize across four decades of operation.
The Boai Road address places it in the Boai Special Zone (博愛特區) — the restricted district surrounding the Presidential Office. The same zone within which Master Lin made garments for the First Lady during the Chiang Ching-kuo administration is the zone in which the studio still operates. The presidential connection is not a marketing claim; it appears in the Taiwan National Cultural Memory Database record and in academic coverage of Lin's biography.
There is no English-language travel guide coverage. No TripAdvisor page. No Lonely Planet mention. The studio appears in Smile Taiwan (CommonWealth's culture magazine), a Ming Chuan University journalism case study, the National Cultural Memory Database, and a Taipei City Government radio broadcast from January 2025. The only route to finding it is a third-floor walk-up or a direct referral.
