What It Is

The National Taichung Theater (NTT) is a performing arts center in Xitun District completed in 2016, designed by Japanese architect Toyo Ito (伊東豊雄). It is the most architecturally significant building constructed in Taiwan in the 21st century to date. The structure consists of 58 interlocking curved wall systems — a form Toyo Ito describes as an "emerging grid" or 音響洞窟 (sound cave): instead of right angles and flat planes, the building is organised around curved concrete tubes that create irregular cavern-like interior spaces, staircases that curve in three dimensions, and a lobby that has no parallel in Taiwanese architecture.

The lobby and lower public floors are free to enter on any day the building is open. The sixth-floor rooftop garden (臻劇場外 terrace) is also free and provides the best exterior view of the curving roof structure and the Xitun District skyline. There are three performance halls: the Grand Theater (2,014 seats), the Playhouse (800 seats), and the Black Box Theater (200 seats). Seeing a performance requires a ticket; touring the architecture does not.

What to See

  • Lobby (Ground Floor): The curved concrete walls and their irregular intersections are best understood from inside the lobby — photographs flatten the spatial effect. Spend 10–15 minutes moving through the space before going up.
  • 6F Rooftop Garden: Open-air terrace with the curved roof structure visible at close range. On clear days, views extend west toward the Xitun commercial zone and east toward central Taichung. Free.
  • B2 Commercial Zone: Restaurant level (operating hours vary); café and bar by the building's operating group; suitable for a late-afternoon drink.
  • Stairwells: The building's emergency and access stairwells are curved. Walking between floors rather than taking the elevator gives a more complete read of the structural logic.

Why This Building

The NTT took 10 years to build (2006–2016) partly because there is no precedent for constructing walls that curve in three dimensions out of concrete at this scale. The construction required custom formwork systems developed specifically for the project. It is internationally recognised — it appears in architectural publications and curricula globally — but is relatively little-discussed in Taichung's tourist infrastructure, which focuses on Miyahara and Rainbow Village. For anyone with any interest in architecture, it is the most important stop on the day trip.

Performance note: If you want to see a performance at NTT, check the program 4–6 weeks in advance. The venue hosts international touring productions, local dance and theater, and chamber music. Tickets are available on NTCH's ticketing platform.
