What It Is
宮原眼科 (Miyahara) is a 1927 Japanese colonial ophthalmology clinic — built by Dr. Miyahara Naeki (宮原武熊), a public health official and eye doctor appointed by the colonial government — that was abandoned after the war, gutted by a typhoon flood in the 1990s, and left derelict for two decades. In 2010, the 日出 (Sunrise) food group acquired the ruins and rebuilt them as a flagship dessert emporium under its 日月神燈 brand, retaining the arched brick exterior and the exposed iron roof skeleton while installing a floor-to-ceiling bookcase interior stocked with tea, pineapple cakes, and chocolate products.

What to Buy
Two categories: the ice cream (eat here) and the packaged goods (take home or forward). The packaged goods — particularly the 鳳梨酥 (pineapple shortcake) and 塔皮巧克力 (chocolate tarts) under the 日出 brand — are among Taichung's most gift-purchased food items and travel well. Price per box of 10 pineapple cakes: approximately NTD$300–400.
The Adjacent Building
The same ownership group operates 第四信用合作社 (4th Credit Cooperative), a 1937 Japanese colonial bank building approximately 100m from Miyahara, repurposed as an additional dessert and gift space with a similar aesthetic. If the Miyahara queue is long, 第四信用合作社 often has shorter waits for the same product range.
