What It Is
草悟道 (Calligraphy Greenway, lit. "Grass Path of Enlightenment") is a 1.6km north-south linear park running through Taichung's West District, from the National Museum of Natural Science at its northern terminus to 台中女中 (Taichung Girls' High School) at the south. It is the structural spine of the day trip: every major midday and afternoon destination either fronts the greenway or is within 200m of it.
How It Fits the Day
After leaving the National Museum of Natural Science, walk south from 館前路 onto the greenway. The walk to Miyahara (宮原眼科) in the Central District is approximately 25–30 minutes on foot from the museum, passing through the greenway's full length and then continuing south on 中山路. This walk is the day's connective tissue: no taxi needed, no transit, and the route passes all the midday browse-worthy stops.
Key Stops Along the Route (North to South)
- 國立自然科學博物館 — northern anchor, covered separately
- 勤美術館 (KMoCA — Kibla Museum of Contemporary Art) — free outdoor sculpture and installation work at 英才路 crossing
- 勤美誠品 (Eslite Spectrum Taichung) — five floors; worth 20 minutes if you want books, design goods, or a café stop
- 草悟道 market stalls — weekend-only pop-up vendors between 英才路 and 公益路; handmade goods, ceramics, illustration prints
- 審計新村 turnoff — right turn at 民生路 (covered separately)
Practical Notes
In August (the time of writing), midday temperatures peak around 33–36°C with high humidity. The greenway's tree canopy reduces the effective temperature by several degrees, but the walk from museum to Miyahara is still 30+ minutes in the sun. Carrying water and starting the walk before 11:30 or after 16:00 is advisable if heat-sensitive.
